Why fencing works differently in Ostim

Ostim generates more demand for fencing than almost anywhere else in Ankara, but the need here is nothing like enclosing a garden. On the plots along Alınteri, Cevat Dündar and 100. Yıl, drawing a boundary is a question of how the site works rather than how it looks: forklift routes, lorry manoeuvring, open stock yards, a workshop courtyard that stands empty overnight. The answer to "which fence" comes from what happens inside the plot.

On an industrial plot a fence does three jobs. It marks the boundary, keeps material inside and makes unauthorised entry harder. Where a garden puts privacy first, here the priorities are durability and sightlines: stock being visible is rarely a problem, whereas a line that survives knocks, weather and time certainly is.

There is also the matter of timing. Work in Ostim tends to come up at short notice — not next week, but this afternoon. Because our depot sits on 1604. Sokak off Alınteri Bulvarı, orders from here skip transport planning altogether; you can collect stocked items in your own vehicle.

The product Ostim asks for most: wire mesh

Most of the demand here gathers around galvanized chain link fence and PVC coated mesh. The reason is straightforward: the cost per metre is low, the advantage grows as the run lengthens, and it does not block the view across an open yard. Being able to see into a stock area is often exactly what is wanted.

Galvanized mesh resists corrosion markedly better than bare steel wire, which makes it the right starting point for a line that has to stand outdoors for years. The PVC coated version adds a further layer over the galvanising; the colour keeps the line looking tidier and it reduces the chance of a hand being cut on contact. At gates with heavy foot traffic that difference earns its keep.

Mesh does not stand up on its own — the posts carry the line. On Ostim plots concrete posts are usually preferred, because where a lorry or forklift might clip them they are more forgiving than a metal profile and they need no maintenance.

When panel fence is the better answer

Panel fence gives a more corporate appearance than mesh and goes up without the business of tensioning a line. That is why facilities with a frontage onto the road, and those that receive customers, generally choose panel: the line stays straight and does not sag over time.

What matters in a panel is the wire gauge and the arrangement of the horizontal wires. A standard section is enough on runs of moderate height, while taller lines and exposed open areas call for a heavier section, since resistance to twisting follows directly from it.

Where the office frontage also needs screening, louvre fence is used on that stretch: the horizontal blades keep the inside out of view while the line stays flat and orderly. Screening an entire industrial plot in louvre is usually unnecessary expense — the visible frontage alone is enough.

Running metres come into the choice as well. On long lines the cost per metre of mesh keeps its advantage; on short, visible frontages the appearance of panel wins. On most Ostim plots the two are combined: panel on the road frontage, mesh along the back and side boundaries.

If security is the point, look at the top of the line

At facilities that stand empty overnight the fence itself rarely provides enough deterrence; what decides it is the top of the line. Concertina razor wire is laid over the line in a coil and makes climbing effectively impossible. Flat wrap razor wire does the same job in tighter sections such as a wall top, taking up less room.

Razor wire is a sharp product and is not fitted casually. The height of the line, the distance to the neighbouring plot and the proximity of any footway need to be considered beforehand. We look at these points together during the site survey.

Gates and access: where the lorry turns

The most common mistake on an industrial plot is the gate opening. A gate is planned around where the vehicle turns, not merely where it passes through. A narrow opening costs time on every movement and puts strain on the line over the years.

For wide openings a sliding gate is usually the right answer: it needs no room for leaves to swing and does not jam when a vehicle is parked in front of it. Leaving a separate pedestrian gate for staff keeps the main gate from being opened and closed all day.

Work on an industrial plot rarely stops at the perimeter. A good share of what comes into the depot concerns the smaller jobs that sit alongside the main line.

Welded mesh panels. 100x200 and 120x240 cm spot welded mesh are used here mostly for infill between panels, machine guarding and closing off the back of racking. Because they are handled in smaller pieces than a fence panel, they stay practical in narrow and irregular openings. On the construction side welded steel mesh is a separate item, specified by aperture and wire diameter to the project calculation.

Chicken wire. The name can mislead. In Ostim this product is mostly wanted not for poultry but for light caging and separation — partitioning inside a warehouse, closing a ventilation opening, or a low boundary at the edge of a planted area. Galvanized, PVC coated and economy options are chosen to budget.

Garden fencing and artificial grass fence. Ostim has small planted areas in front of its office buildings where a heavy industrial line would be out of place. A low garden mesh, or artificial grass fence where the view needs softening, suits these spots. Set in front of a mesh line it both screens the frontage and takes the hardness off the concrete.

Gabions. Where a plot has a change in level and soil has to be held, box gabions and land type gabions come in. They act as a retaining structure and a fence line can be built on top, which settles two requirements at once.

Temporary areas. For exhibitions, site works or short-term storage a mobile fence is erected; being demountable and movable, it makes more sense than a permanent line for one-off jobs.

What we ask when measuring

The figure given over the phone is usually the length of the plot on paper; on site the line comes out differently. On sloping ground the true length increases, the number of corners changes the post count, and whether the ground is firm or made-up determines how the posts are set.

That is why the site survey is free within Ankara. For plots in Ostim an appointment can generally be given the same day; we take the measurements on site and mark the corner points and access positions together, so nothing is short or left over on the order.

For those who want to see the depot

The advantage of Ostim is that you do not have to choose from a photograph. At our depot at Alınteri Bulvarı 1604. Sokak No:29 you can feel the wire gauge of a panel, look at the aperture of the mesh and see how much a louvre blade actually screens. For a firm ordering fencing for the first time this settles matters faster than half an hour on the phone.

Items held in stock can be collected in person. Coming with your own vehicle removes the transport charge entirely; if you do not have one we will arrange the delivery, in which case transport is charged.
