What Are Gabions and Poultry Netting?
This category brings together the lightweight covering products woven from fine wire and the gabion baskets used in stone-filled retaining structures. What they share is that, unlike classic perimeter thinking, they are used to cover, filter or shade a surface, or hold back a mass. Poultry netting takes shape easily thanks to its hexagonal aperture and flexible weave; a gabion forms a gravity wall by filling a welded or woven basket with stone.
AnkaraTel sells all of these from its Ostim, Ankara warehouse and ships across Türkiye. Site surveys are free of charge within Ankara; delivery is charged, Ankara included. Installation is not a standard service; our teams attend site only on projects of approximately 1,000 metres and above.
Which Product Suits Which Job? (Selection Guide)
The choice rests on one question the product has to answer: what is it holding in, and what is it letting through? Animals, stone, insects or sunlight?
| Product | Job | Structure | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poultry Netting (Economy) | Containing poultry | Hexagonal aperture, light coating | Enclosed coops, short-term work |
| Poultry Netting (Galvanized) | Containing poultry outdoors | Hexagonal aperture, galvanized | Gardens, open coops, cages |
| Poultry Netting (PVC Coated) | Long life in damp conditions | Galvanized plus PVC coating | Wet areas, animal shelters |
| Box Gabion | Retaining, holding a mass | Welded or woven basket | Slopes, retaining walls, landscaping |
| Mattress Gabion | Boundary and slope protection | Larger aperture basket | Land boundaries, stream banks |
| Insect Screen | Keeping insects out | Fine weave | Windows, greenhouses, doors |
| Shade Net | Cutting sun and wind | Woven HDPE net | Greenhouses, car parks, sites, terraces |
Poultry netting comes in three grades, and they are not cheap and expensive versions of one another but products for different environments. Economy chicken wire is for enclosed, dry, short-term use; outdoors it can rust within the first seasons. For permanent use in the open air the right product is galvanized chicken wire. Where there is irrigation, manure contact or a coastal climate, choose PVC coated chicken wire; the plastic skin delays corrosion and softens the surface the animals touch.
On the gabion side the decision follows the load the structure carries. For a permanent retaining structure that holds a difference in ground level and resists earth pressure, use Box Gabion; the basket has thicker wire and a tighter aperture, and it is stepped in courses to form a wall. Where the aim is not to carry load but to mark a land boundary, protect a slope face or slow erosion along a stream, Mattress Gabion is cheaper and faster to install.
The remaining two products act as covers. Insect Screen blocks insects at windows, doors and greenhouse entrances; the tighter the weave, the better the protection and the lower the airflow. Shade Net cuts a set percentage of sunlight, breaks the wind and also works as a privacy screen; the choice follows the percentage of light you want to cut. Nets with a high shade factor raise the wind load too, so supporting posts and fixing points must be planned accordingly.
Technical Selection Criteria
Three values decide poultry netting: mesh aperture, wire diameter and roll size. The aperture follows the size of the animal to be contained; chicks and small poultry need the tightest apertures. As wire diameter rises, tear resistance improves and flexibility drops. Roll height sets the number of joins: picking the right height is both stronger and cheaper than joining lengths on site with tie wire.
For gabions, ask about basket wire diameter, aperture and coating grade. Where there is contact with water, a heavily zinc-coated or PVC coated basket is the better choice. Just as important as the basket are the connecting components: if the spiral wire or clips tying the boxes together are inadequate, the wall bulges over time. With shade net, weight per square metre and UV additive are the values that really decide how many seasons it survives in the sun.
Where Are They Used?
Poultry netting goes into coops and cages, garden boundaries, tree-base protection baskets, compost heaps, reinforcement under plaster and landscaping work. Gabions are chosen for retaining walls, road and slope protection, stream rehabilitation, landscape walls, car park and villa boundaries and noise barriers. Insect screen serves homes, hotels, restaurants and greenhouses; shade net covers greenhouses, car parks, sports grounds, cafe terraces and site screening. It is worth noting that panel fence is often added on top of gabion walls to strengthen the boundary.
How Much Material Do You Need?
For poultry netting and shade net the calculation runs on surface area: work out the area to be covered, add a margin for overlap at the joins, then divide by the surface area of a roll to get the number of rolls. Forgetting the overlap allowance is the most common mistake, and it is why netting runs out halfway through a job.
Gabions run on volume. Multiply the length, height and thickness of the wall for the total volume, then divide that by the size of basket chosen to get the number of baskets. The same volume governs the fill stone, and because voids remain between the stones the tonnage is worked out from the volume and the unit weight of the stone. The fill stone must be noticeably larger than the basket aperture, or the stones spill out through the mesh. Site surveys are free of charge within Ankara; outside the city we calculate from dimensions and a sketch.
What Determines the Price?
The items that set the price of poultry netting are coating type (economy, galvanized, PVC coated), wire diameter, mesh aperture, roll height and total running metres. For gabions it is basket wire diameter, aperture, box size, coating grade and quantity; the fill stone is a separate item, sourced on site rather than supplied by us. Shade net is priced on shade percentage and weight per square metre, insect screen on weave material and mesh tightness. All our prices include VAT; instead of a headline figure we quote against your running metres.
Ordering and Shipping
Send us the product, size and quantity and we prepare a VAT-inclusive quotation. After approval the shipment leaves our Ostim warehouse: rolls of netting, insect screen and shade net go by parcel courier, while bulky consignments such as large numbers of gabion baskets travel by freight. Delivery is charged, deliveries within Ankara are charged as well, and we never ship at no cost. Freight appears as a separate line on the quotation, based on volume, tonnage and distance. Installation is not one of our standard services; our teams attend site on projects of approximately 1,000 metres and above.
FAQ
Gabion and Chicken Wire — common questions
What is the difference between economy, galvanized and PVC coated poultry netting?
Economy poultry netting is for enclosed, dry and short-term use; outdoors it can rust within the first seasons. The galvanized type is suitable for permanent use in the open air. The PVC coated type gives the longest life in areas that are irrigated, in contact with manure or in a coastal climate.
How do I choose the mesh aperture for poultry netting?
The aperture is set by the size of the animal to be contained; chicks and small poultry need the tightest apertures. As the aperture narrows, the amount of wire per square metre rises and so does the cost. Where only large poultry have to be contained, a wider aperture is the economical choice.
What is the difference between a box gabion and a mattress gabion?
A box gabion has thicker wire and a tighter aperture; it is used in permanent retaining walls that resist earth pressure. A mattress gabion is an economical, quick solution for lighter work such as marking a land boundary, protecting a slope face or slowing erosion along a stream. For load-bearing structures, choose the box gabion.
How much stone does a gabion need, and do you supply the stone?
The fill stone is a separate item that we do not supply; it is sourced on site. The quantity required is calculated from the volume found by multiplying the length, height and thickness of the wall. The stone must be noticeably larger than the basket aperture, or the stones spill out through the mesh.
What should I look for when choosing a shade net?
Start with the percentage of light you want to cut, then look at the weight per square metre and the UV additive; those two values decide how many seasons the net survives in the sun. Nets with a high shade factor also raise the wind load. Supporting posts and fixing points must therefore be planned accordingly.
Which insect screen material suits which environment?
With insect screen, the tighter the weave the better the protection against insects and the lower the airflow. A standard weave is enough for house and office windows, while tougher environments such as greenhouses and kitchens call for more durable materials. When giving dimensions, remember to add an overlap allowance to the internal frame size.
How many rolls should I order?
Work out the surface area to be covered, add a margin for the overlap at the joins, then divide that area by the surface area of a roll. Forgetting the overlap allowance is the most common mistake and it is why netting runs out halfway through a job. Within Ankara we can take the measurements ourselves with a free site survey.
How do shipping and installation work?
Rolls of netting, insect screen and shade net go by parcel courier, while bulky consignments such as large numbers of gabion baskets are sent by freight to every province in Türkiye. Delivery is charged and this applies to deliveries within Ankara as well. Installation is not a standard service; our teams attend site on projects of approximately 1,000 metres and above.
