What is a panel fence?

A panel fence is a perimeter system built from horizontal and vertical wires joined by resistance (spot) welding and supplied as ready-made panels. The panels are fixed to the posts with clamps and bolts; unlike rolled chain link fence, they do not have to be tensioned. That makes installation fast, and the line stays straight instead of sagging years down the road.

The real advantage of a panel fence over chain link is its rigidity. The stiffening bends pressed across the middle of each panel (omega profiles) make it behave like a sheet, so it resists pushing, impact and climbing far better. This is why it has become the default choice for factories, plants, residential compounds and schools.

Panel fence sizes

Panel fence sizes are written as panel height × panel width. Production in Türkiye has largely standardised on a 250 cm width; the variable is the height.

The rule for choosing a height is simple: the taller the fence, the stronger the deterrent. Along a garden or compound boundary 120–150 cm is usually enough; factories, warehouses and school grounds normally go to 200 cm. Wind load rises with height, so the posts and concrete foundations have to be sized accordingly.

Panel fence post sizes

The post is chosen 40–50 cm longer than the panel; that extra length is what goes into the ground. A 150 cm panel, for example, is normally paired with a 200 cm post. Post sections are box sections such as 40×60 mm and 60×40 mm, and the section is stepped up as the height increases.

Types of panel fence

Single wire panel fence

Built from a single row of horizontal and vertical wires. It is the most economical option and is perfectly adequate where mid-level strength is required: gardens, plots of land and farmland.

Double wire panel fence

The horizontal wires run in pairs, passing either side of the vertical wire. The panel becomes noticeably stiffer and much harder to cut or bend open. It is used where security is the priority, such as factories, energy facilities and logistics warehouses.

Louvre (infill) panel fence

Vertical slats are threaded through the mesh apertures to block the line of sight. It combines the rigidity of a panel fence with a visual screen, which is why it is popular on compound and villa boundaries where privacy matters.

What determines the cost of a panel fence?

Panel fence is costed by the square metre or the linear meter, and the figure moves with the following:

• Panel height: more square metres means more material; this is the single biggest factor.
• Wire diameter: a 5 mm panel costs noticeably more than a 4 mm one, but it stands far more rigidly.
• Single or double wire: double wire panels are ahead on both material and labour.
• Surface treatment: galvanized only, or galvanized and powder coated? A coated product lasts longer and looks cleaner.
• Posts and fixings: posts, clamps, bolts, caps and, where required, concrete foundations are separate line items. A fence system is never just the panels.
• Running meters: the unit rate falls on larger quantities.
• Shipping: freight cost depends on distance and volume; delivery is charged.

How much panel fence and how many posts do you need?

The calculation has two stages: panels first, then posts.

1. Measure the total length. Add up the sides of the area to be enclosed and deduct the gate openings.
2. Number of panels: total length ÷ 2.5 m (panel width). Round any remainder up.
3. Number of posts: number of panels + 1. Each panel sits between two posts, so the run needs one extra post at the end.
4. Corners and gates: an additional post may be needed at every corner and beside each gate.

Example: for a 100 metre boundary, 100 ÷ 2.5 = 40 panels and 40 + 1 = 41 posts. With one gate and two corners, add a few more posts. For fixings, allow roughly 4 clamps per panel.

How is a panel fence installed?

Worked through in the right order, a panel fence needs no special equipment. Once we have shipped the product you can have it installed yourself:

1. Set out the line. Run a string line between the two ends. How straight the finished fence looks depends entirely on this line.
2. Mark the post positions. Space the marks at the panel width, typically 2.5 m.
3. Dig the foundations. In soil, 40–50 cm deep and 30×30 cm wide is enough. Set the post, pour the concrete and let the concrete cure — skipping this step is the most common mistake of all.
4. Check the posts for plumb. Use a spirit level; while the concrete is still wet you can still correct them.
5. Fit the panels. Each panel is fixed to the post with clamps and bolts. Check the height alignment on every panel.
6. Fit the caps. Post caps keep water out; without them the post rusts from the inside.

On a concrete surface, instead of digging foundations you use flanged (base plate) posts fixed down with anchor bolts. On sloping ground the panels are stepped down the gradient.

Panel fence gates

A fence line is finished off with a gate. The gate options that match panel fence are: a pedestrian gate for foot traffic, a double swing gate for vehicle entrances, and a sliding gate for wide openings. Gates are normally produced in the same panel infill and the same colour as the fence, so the run stays visually consistent. You need to state the gate size when you order, because the posts on either side of a gate are specified heavier.

Maintenance and service life

A galvanized and powder coated panel fence is effectively maintenance free. Two things decide how long it lasts: zinc coating thickness and paint quality. Cheap products use a thin zinc layer, so once the paint is scratched the steel underneath starts to rust within a few years. Any scratches made during installation should be touched in with repair paint — especially on cut ends.
