What is an artificial grass fence?

An artificial grass fence is a screening system built by threading artificial turf strips through a chain link or panel fence carrier. From a distance it reads as a green, solid, natural wall; up close, the wire behind it keeps the assembly both light and durable. It is also sold as grass-covered wire mesh, green garden fencing or artificial turf fence.

The single reason people choose it is privacy. A plain chain link fence marks the boundary but shows everything behind it. An artificial grass fence also forms a sight-blocking screen — without the weight of a masonry wall, and it can be applied over a fence you already have.

Types of artificial grass fence

Single-sided artificial grass fence

The turf strips are threaded onto one face of the mesh. It looks solid from the outside while the wire stays visible from the inside. It is the most common and most economical option, and enough whenever the boundary is only seen from one direction.

Double-sided artificial grass fence

The strips are threaded through both faces, so the fence looks green and solid from either side. It is the choice between neighbouring plots, on housing estates and on any boundary where both faces are on show. Because it uses more material, the price per metre is higher than the single-sided version.

Grass strips over an existing panel fence

Turf strips are threaded onto an existing panel fence or welded wire mesh after the fact. For anyone who wants to turn an existing fence green rather than build a new system from scratch, this is the fastest solution. You buy only the grass strips; the carrier is already in place.

Technical characteristics

Four things decide how an artificial grass fence performs: the quality of the carrier wire, the material of the turf strip, the blade density and the UV resistance.

• Carrier: Galvanized or PVC coated chain link fence. The galvanized coating is what delays rusting outdoors; on budget products it is kept thin and service life drops accordingly.
• Turf strip: Usually polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) based. PE is softer and looks more natural; PP is stiffer and resists the elements slightly better.
• UV stabilisation: The most critical property of an artificial grass fence. A product with too little UV additive fades, goes dull and turns brittle within a summer or two. On sun-facing runs the difference shows from the first year.
• Blade density: How closely the strips sit per unit area decides how "solid" the fence looks. A loosely woven product is cheap, but you can see through it and it will not deliver the privacy you expected.

Heights and roll sizes vary from product to product. In garden and estate perimeters the most used heights are between 1 and 2 metres. Ask us for the current sizes and wire thicknesses in stock — we will work out the best fit for your job together.

Where is it used?

An artificial grass fence earns its place anywhere appearance and privacy matter equally:

• Villas and detached gardens: blocking the view on a neighbour's boundary, framing the garden in green
• Housing estates and apartment blocks: hiding car parks, bin areas, transformers and other eyesores
• Cafes, restaurants and terraces: separating the seating area from the street, forming a decorative boundary
• Pools and leisure areas: a windbreak and sight-blocking screen in one
• Sites and temporary areas: closing off an unsightly area quickly
• Balconies and roof terraces: greenery and privacy in tight spaces

How much artificial grass fence do you need? Working out the meterage

Artificial grass fence is sold by the linear metre. The calculation is simple:

1. Measure the length of each side of the area to be enclosed and add them up.
2. Deduct the openings you are leaving for gates and entrances.
3. Add about 5% extra for cutting waste and mistakes.

Example: the perimeter of a 30 × 20 metre rectangular plot is (30+20) × 2 = 100 metres. Deduct a 3 metre gate opening and 97 metres remain; with the 5% allowance you order roughly 102 metres.

You also need to state the height — at the same meterage there is a serious price difference between 1 and 2 metres. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the area and we will decide together.

What determines the price of an artificial grass fence?

Quoting a single list price would be misleading; wildly different qualities are sold under the same product name. The factors that set the price are:

• Height: the most decisive factor per metre.
• Single or double sided: double sided uses close to twice the material, so it costs noticeably more.
• Blade density: a densely woven product looks fuller and contains more material.
• Carrier wire quality: galvanized coating thickness and wire diameter feed straight into service life.
• Running metres: the unit price falls on high meterage.
• Shipping: carriage and haulage charges vary with distance and volume; delivery is charged.

How is an artificial grass fence installed?

With the right preparation, an artificial grass fence needs no special craftsmanship. Once we ship the product you can run the job yourself:

1. Set the posts. Steel tube or concrete posts are usually spaced 2-3 metres apart depending on the ground. The wider the spacing, the more the fence sags in the middle.
2. Tension the carrier mesh. The chain link fence or panel is fixed to the posts under tension. Slack wire sags even further once the grass strips go on.
3. Thread the strips. The strips are threaded through the mesh apertures one after another. Working in the same direction at an even spacing is what gives a tidy finish.
4. Fix the ends. Strip ends are secured with clips, cable ties or tying wire; skipping this step is what lets the wind open them up.
5. Check the line. Keeping the top edge straight is the detail that decides the visible quality of the job.

Maintenance and service life

An artificial grass fence needs practically no maintenance; nothing to paint, nothing to rot, nothing to prune. A dusty surface can be hosed down once or twice a year. Service life depends largely on UV resistance: quality manufacturing holds its colour for years, while a cheap product yellows and starts to crack after two or three summers. The most common mistake here is buying cheap first time round and paying to redo the whole job a few years later.
