What is a construction site security barrier?

A construction site security barrier is a galvanized panel system that separates a work site from pedestrians, traffic and unauthorised entry; it is erected without being fixed into the ground and dismantled again once the job is finished. On site it is also known as a site barrier, site hoarding panel or construction panel.

Its purpose runs in two directions: it protects people outside from the site, and it closes the site off from anyone trying to get in. On construction projects, enclosing the site is a legal requirement and one of the first items a health and safety inspection looks at. Our stock size is 200x250 cm, that is 200 cm high and 250 cm wide. The panel is galvanized and is sold per piece.

The 200 cm height is not arbitrary. It is the threshold an average adult cannot see over and cannot easily climb; on lower panels you lose both the visual screen and the deterrent effect. On a construction site the visibility of the enclosure is a function in itself: the clearer and straighter the line, the sooner a passer-by notices it and the less inclined they are to cross it. A ragged, crooked line with gaps quickly turns into a shortcut.

Why is the 250 cm panel better suited to construction sites?

Compared with wider panels of the same height, the 250 cm panel has three concrete advantages, and all of them come down to geometry.

  • More frequent support: a support point occurs every 2.5 metres along the line. Over the same 100 metres more bases come into play, which makes a noticeable difference to stability in wind and under the load of anyone leaning on the panel.
  • Following an irregular boundary: site boundaries are rarely a straight line; kerbs, trees, power poles and neighbouring plot lines create constant changes of direction. A shorter panel follows those breaks with less waste.
  • Easier handling: a narrow panel is easier for one person to lift, and where the line has to be moved frequently inside the site that difference shows up in daily labour.

The trade-off is that closing the same run takes more panels and more bases. On sites with a long, straight boundary, temporary fence panels do the job with fewer parts; on sites with a broken, congested boundary open to traffic, the barrier panel is the better choice.

How many panels do you need? A formula

The calculation is a single line. Divide the length of the run to be closed by 2.5 and round up:

  • Number of panels = run length (m) ÷ 2.5
  • Number of bases = number of panels + 1 (on a fully closed perimeter, the same as the number of panels)
  • Number of couplers = number of panels − 1; on windy elevations and those facing heavy pedestrian traffic, fitting two couplers per joint (top and bottom) doubles this figure.

Example: for a 200 metre site boundary, 200 ÷ 2.5 = 80 panels, 81 bases and, with single couplers, 79 couplers. Adding 2-3 panels to act as a vehicle gate — left uncoupled so they can swing open — plus 2-3 spare panels for corner waste makes for a realistic plan.

Two further situations upset the calculation on site. The first is the boundary changing during the project: when the excavation widens, the crane is repositioned or the material laydown area grows, the line is moved and the running metres increase. The second is pavement and highway occupation permits; the boundary granted by the local authority may be narrower or wider than the line you planned. For that reason, placing the panel order once the permitted boundary is settled avoids a follow-up order and a second delivery charge.

On long projects it is also common practice to keep a proportion of the panels in reserve. The need for a temporary internal division, a marked-off hazard zone or a separate material storage area always arises as work progresses, and having spare panels to hand covers that need the same day.

Bases, couplers and stability against toppling

With site barriers the entire risk is concentrated in toppling. A run facing pedestrian traffic falling over is a serious safety incident, which is why the choice of base and coupler matters more than the panel itself.

Bases are either concrete or fillable plastic; a plastic base must always be filled with water or sand. The coupler turns two panels into a single body; on an uncoupled run, every panel can fall on its own. Using double couplers, top and bottom, on the elevation facing the pavement; alternating the bases from side to side rather than placing them all on the site side; and coupling the gate panel shut at the end of the day are the three habits that pay off most on site.

Once erected, the line should not be left to itself either. Plant movements, material unloading and excavation vibration gradually shift the bases. A short weekly check to retighten loose couplers and reposition bases that have crept largely eliminates the risk of a collapse.

Screening and dust control

Site barriers are usually covered over, both to keep the work area out of sight and to reduce dust and flying debris. The one thing to watch here is wind.

An open mesh panel lets wind through; once it is fully sheeted, the panel becomes a sail and the risk of toppling multiplies. That is why a breathable shade net is preferable to a solid tarpaulin, and why runs that carry a covering need additional bases. On multi-storey work, separate debris netting is used against falling material; a barrier panel does not do that job on its own.

Access points and night-time security

The weakest link in a site enclosure is not the panel but the access points. If the number of separate entry points is not decided at the outset, the line gets opened up at random as work progresses and soon becomes impossible to control.

In practice three types of access are planned: a vehicle entrance (for concrete mixers, lorries and plant, usually two or three panels wide), a personnel entrance (a single panel, the point where access is checked) and a materials entrance. These panels are not coupled; they are used as swinging leaves. They must always be coupled shut at the end of the day — a gate panel left open both invites unauthorised entry and becomes the weakest point of the line in overnight wind.

For night-time security, three simple measures make a difference on site: lighting the access points, reinforcing the corners of the line with double couplers, and fixing company details and warning signs to the panels. The signage is also required for legal notification purposes. On elevations facing the pavement and the road, reflective marking that helps pedestrians pick out the line reduces the risk of an accident, particularly after dark.

What determines the price of a barrier?

  • Number of panels: on bulk orders at site scale the unit cost drops noticeably.
  • Frame tube section and wire diameter: sites where heavy plant operates call for a heavier section, and the price moves accordingly.
  • Base type and quantity: concrete and plastic bases are priced differently, and concrete bases also add to transport weight.
  • Number of couplers: whether you work with single or double couplers has a direct effect on the total.
  • Dispatch: high-volume orders travel by articulated lorry; the freight charge is shown separately on the quotation.

No, we do not offer hire; we sell the product. Once you buy it the panel belongs to your company, so you dismantle it at the end of the project and re-erect it on the next site. A galvanized panel comfortably takes several site cycles.

Does it need to be fixed into the ground?

No. The panel sits on a base and requires no concrete foundation or driven post. Installation consists of setting the panels into the bases and coupling each one to its neighbour; it comes down just as quickly when the job is finished.

What should I do to stop the barrier blowing over?

Always fill plastic bases with water or sand, fit a coupler at every joint, and move to double couplers top and bottom on elevations facing pedestrian traffic. Alternating the bases from side to side rather than placing them all on one side of the line also improves resistance to toppling.

Can I sheet over the panels?

You can, but while an open mesh panel lets wind through, a sheeted panel becomes a sail and the risk of toppling multiplies. Choose a breathable shade net over a solid tarpaulin and increase the number of bases on any run that carries a covering.
