What Are Access and Security Systems?
A perimeter is only as strong as its gate. Access and security systems are the gates and barriers that control how people, vehicles and machinery enter and leave an enclosed area, closing the openings that are the weakest point of a panel fence or chain link line. A badly chosen gate is not just a security gap: if it does not suit the ground it soon scrapes, sags and wrecks its hinges.
AnkaraTel sells these products from its Ostim, Ankara warehouse and ships across Türkiye by freight. Site surveys are free of charge within Ankara; delivery is charged, including within Ankara. Installation is not one of our standard services; our teams attend site only on perimeter projects of approximately 1,000 metres and above.
Which Gate Suits Which Need? (Selection Guide)
Three questions decide the gate: Is the traffic pedestrian or vehicular? How wide is the opening? Is there enough clear space and level ground where it has to open? The answers point to the right row below.
| Product | Traffic | Opening Action | Ground and Space |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian Gate | Pedestrian | Single hinged leaf | No special requirement |
| Double Swing Gate | Vehicle | Two hinged leaves | Needs swing area |
| Sliding Gate | Vehicle | Horizontal, on a floor rail | Level, hard ground |
| Cantilever Sliding Gate | Vehicle | Cantilevered, clear of the ground | Best on slopes and snow |
| Field Gate | Tractors, machinery | Hinged, wire infill | Suits soil ground |
| Automatic Barrier | Traffic control | Motorised boom arm | Needs a power supply |
A separate pedestrian opening is the right call on almost every project: with a Pedestrian Gate the big vehicle gate stays shut for routine access, which extends hinge and motor life. For vehicles the usual first choice is the Double Swing Gate, the most economical solution, but the sweep area of the leaves must stay clear inside or outside. On tight or sloping ground a swing gate scrapes and the lock will not engage.
Where space is short, gates open horizontally instead. The Sliding Gate runs on a rail set into the ground; it is economical and spans wide openings, but the rail must stay clean and clogs wherever snow, mud, sand or leaves collect. The Cantilever Gate never touches the ground and needs no rail, the most trouble-free choice in snowy regions and on sloping entrances. In return it needs a longer frame with a counterweight run of almost half the opening behind it, and a stronger foundation.
For farmland, vineyards, pasture and site entrances the answer is the Field Gate, a wire infill on a tube profile frame: light, at home on soil and built wide enough for tractors and plant machinery. Where the aim is to manage traffic flow rather than close the gap (residential entrances, car parks, factory weighbridges), use Automatic Barrier Systems. A barrier handles vehicles in seconds but is not a physical perimeter and must always be paired with a fence line.
Technical Selection Criteria
Gate strength starts with the section and wall thickness of the frame profile. A wider opening means a heavier leaf, and a thin profile sags in time; the sag begins as hinge wear and shows itself when the lock falls out of line. Next comes the infill: panel infill matches the fence line, wire infill is lighter, sheet infill blocks the view completely but raises the wind load sharply.
Third is surface protection. Electrostatic powder coating over galvanizing is decisive outdoors because it protects the welds; on painted-only gates corrosion starts at the weld seams. Last comes the hinge, wheel and lock hardware: heavy leaves need bearing hinges, sliding systems need steel wheels and side guide rollers.
Automation and Electrical Infrastructure
If the gates are to be motorised, decide at the order stage, not afterwards. Motorised use changes how leaf rigidity, hinge capacity and foundation sizes are calculated, and you need a power supply at the gate, facing mounting points for the photocells and a weatherproof enclosure for the control panel.
On automatic barriers the boom length follows the width of the opening; long booms need a support leg and a stronger gearbox. On busy entrances always ask the open and close duty cycle of the motor, its heavy-use class. Extras such as card access, remote control and plate recognition must suit the barrier.
Where Are They Used?
Access and security systems are used at factory and warehouse entrances, residential complexes, school and dormitory grounds, car parks, logistics facilities, solar power plants, farmland, livestock farms, municipal facilities, water reservoirs and construction site entrances. The gate should match its perimeter line: a panel infill gate keeps the visual whole on a panel fence line, a wire infill field gate on a galvanized chain link fence line.
What to Check When Measuring
Four measurements are needed before ordering: the clear opening (the gap vehicles pass through with the gate closed), the total post-to-post opening, the gate height wanted and the ground condition. Confuse the clear opening with the total opening and the gate ends up too narrow, or the post positions have to be dug again.
A sliding gate needs a travel distance of almost twice the opening, so keep that level strip clear. A cantilever gate needs a counterweight run behind it, and a deeper foundation as the opening grows. Within Ankara our team measures with a free site survey; elsewhere we work from photographs and a dimensioned sketch.
What Sets the Price and How Is It Shipped?
Gate prices are set by the opening and height, the section and wall thickness of the frame profile, the infill type (panel, wire or sheet), the surface treatment, the class of the hinge, wheel and lock hardware, and whether the gate is motorised. On automatic barriers the boom length, motor power and extra control hardware decide. All published prices include VAT, and since every gate is made to measure, each quotation is project-specific.
Gates are bulky and normally travel by freight rather than parcel carrier. Delivery is charged and deliveries within Ankara are charged too; nothing is shipped free of charge. Freight appears as a separate line in the quotation, based on size, weight and distance. Gate installation is not one of our standard services; our team attends site on perimeter projects of approximately 1,000 metres and above, otherwise a local fitter or your own team does the work.
FAQ
Access and Security Systems — common questions
Should I choose a sliding gate or a cantilever gate?
If the ground is level, hard and can be kept clean, a sliding gate is the more economical solution. Where snow, mud, sand or leaves build up, and on sloping entrances, a cantilever gate is the one to choose, because it never touches the ground and the rail cannot clog. In return, a cantilever gate needs a counterweight run behind it and a stronger foundation.
How should I give my gate measurements?
Give the clear opening, the total post-to-post opening, the gate height you want and the ground condition together. Confusing the clear opening with the total opening leaves the gate too narrow, or means the post positions have to be dug again. Within Ankara we take the measurements ourselves with a free site survey.
How much space does a double swing gate need?
For the leaves to swing, an area as deep as the leaf width has to be left clear inside or outside. If the parking area is tight or the entrance slopes, the leaves scrape the ground and the lock falls out of line. In those cases a horizontally opening sliding or cantilever gate is the better choice.
Can I motorise the gate later?
The automation decision has to be made at the order stage, because motorised operation changes the way leaf rigidity, hinge capacity and foundation dimensions are calculated. You also need a power supply beside the gate, mounting points for the photocells and a protected enclosure for the control panel. If that infrastructure is not planned in advance, excavation and alteration work will be needed afterwards.
Can an automatic barrier replace a fence?
No. An automatic barrier is designed to manage vehicle traffic, it is not a physical obstacle and it does not stop anyone on foot. If security is the aim, the barrier must always be designed together with a panel fence or chain link fence line.
Do I really need a pedestrian gate?
Leaving a separate pedestrian gate beside the vehicle gate is the right call on almost every project. Because the large gate does not have to be opened for every entry and exit, hinge, wheel and motor life is noticeably longer. It also gives people on foot an entrance away from the vehicle lane, which is safer.
What colours and coatings are the gates made in?
Gates are supplied galvanized, or galvanized and electrostatically powder coated, and the colour is usually matched to the fence line. Because corrosion outdoors starts at the weld seams first, the combination of coating over galvanizing lasts longer. Panel, wire or sheet infill can be applied to suit your requirement.
Do you install the gates?
Installation is not one of our standard services; gates are made to measure and dispatched, and the work is completed by a local fitter or the customer's own team. On perimeter projects of approximately 1,000 metres and above, our installation team does attend site. Delivery is charged in every case, deliveries within Ankara included, and nothing is shipped free of charge.
