What Is an Automatic Barrier System and Where Is It Used?

An automatic barrier is a vehicle access system in which a motor unit and the boom attached to it open and close a passage under control. What sets it apart from a gate is that it is designed to manage vehicle traffic rather than people: it opens quickly, cycles frequently and usually works as part of an access control system.

The most common applications are entrances to housing developments and residences, covered and open car parks, factory and logistics facility gates, public buildings, hospital and school entrances, filling stations and construction site access points. A barrier is usually installed not on its own but as part of an enclosure system; the standard arrangement is a barrier at the vehicle entrance to an area enclosed with panel fence, with a separate gate for pedestrians.

It is worth being clear from the outset that a barrier does not take the place of a gate. The boom is a deterrent and a means of direction rather than a physical stop; it is designed to break if it is forced. The physical security of the area is provided by the enclosure and gate systems, and the barrier is the traffic management layer within that whole. Drawing that distinction is the first condition of setting the right expectations for a project.

Why Is There No Standard Variant or List Price?

You will not find the size and price table on this page that you see on our other products, and the reason is not a lack of stock but the nature of the product. A barrier is not a material, it is a system. The price of the same make and model ends up in very different places depending on boom length, motor type, daily cycle count, the safety equipment selected and the automation it will be connected to.

There is no comparing a system installed on a 4 metre single-lane entrance to a housing development with one installed on the licence-plate-recognition entrance of a logistics facility handling lorry traffic all day, either in hardware or in cost. That is why we quote for barriers on a project basis; we take a few pieces of information from you and put together a configuration specific to your site.

The advantage this approach gives you is that you do not pay for hardware you do not need. There is nothing to be gained from selling an automation package to a customer who has clearly described a simpler requirement; equally, specifying a low-duty unit for a busy facility comes back as a breakdown before long. The right configuration lowers both the initial investment and the maintenance cost you will pay in the years that follow.

Boom Length and Clear Opening

The first measurement to take is the clear opening: the distance from the point where the barrier housing will stand to the opposite edge. The boom is selected to close that opening fully with a little allowance at the tip. Closing an opening with a boom longer than necessary is not an extravagance but a cause of breakdowns; a longer boom means higher inertia and a greater balancing load, and the motor and spring have to be sized for it.

On two-lane entrances it is generally better to install two separate barriers rather than one long boom: the opening time is shorter and entry and exit are managed independently. In tight locations it is essential to check whether there is anything the boom will strike in the fully vertical position, such as a canopy, a tree branch or a cable.

Motor Type and Opening Time

Electromechanical units work with a geared motor and a balance spring; they are adequate for most housing development and commercial entrances of moderate intensity, and the initial cost is lower. Hydraulic units work on oil pressure, move heavy and long booms more smoothly, and stand up better to high cycle counts and continuous use.

Opening time is a question of capacity, not comfort. If a queue forms at the entrance during peak hours you need a fast-opening unit; but mechanical stress rises with speed, so speed is always assessed together with the intensity of use. Whether the boom can be released by hand during a power failure — in other words manual release — is a point worth raising on every project.

The balance spring is the most overlooked part of a barrier. The spring counterbalances the weight of the boom so that the motor only has to start the movement; an incorrectly sized spring puts the motor under constant strain and is the real cause of most breakdowns. When the boom length is changed later, the fact that the spring has to be reset is often missed, and the unit tires within a short time.

Intensity of Use and Cycle Count

The most common mistake in selecting a barrier is underestimating the daily vehicle count. Even in a development of 60 flats, assuming two entries and two exits per vehicle per day, the daily cycle count runs into the hundreds; add visitor traffic and the figure climbs higher still. A unit built for light duty tires quickly at that tempo.

That is why, before quoting, we need to ask about the daily vehicle count, the peak-hour traffic and whether the system will run around the clock or only during working hours. For temporary applications such as construction sites, a temporary arrangement built with temporary fence or the construction safety barrier is often the more sensible answer instead of a permanent barrier.

The operating environment also affects durability. A dusty facility entrance, salt-laden air or harsh winter conditions put a strain on both the housing finish and the electronic board. On units installed outdoors, the protection rating and the surface treatment of the cabinet should always be checked, and the board compartment protected against condensation. If these points are not discussed at the quotation stage, the bill comes back a few years later as maintenance.

Automation Integration and Access Control

How the barrier is triggered defines the character of the system. The simplest arrangement is a remote control. On top of that come card or tag access, intercom connection, plate recognition cameras, car park charging software and connection to building management systems. Each layer requires an additional input on the control board and usually additional cabling.

If you already have a system in place it is critical to tell us at the outset; selecting a control unit compatible with the card reader or software you already use is far cheaper and more reliable than hunting for an adapter afterwards. Separating pedestrian access from the barrier is also planned at this stage; for pedestrians a separate solution such as a sliding gate or a double swing gate is designed in.

Safety Equipment, Power Supply and Ground Preparation

Safety equipment should be treated as mandatory anywhere there is vehicle traffic. A photocell stops the movement if there is a vehicle or a person under the boom as it comes down. A loop detector buried in the ground senses the vehicle magnetically as it passes and prevents the boom from closing early. An LED-lit boom provides visibility at night, while a skirt fitted under the boom discourages pedestrians from walking through.

On the electrical side, a dedicated supply and an earth connection have to be run to the barrier position. On the ground side, the concrete plinth the unit will be anchored to and the cable ducts must be prepared while the concrete is being poured; doing this work after the pour is far more expensive. These are the two points we question most at the survey stage.

It also matters that the channel cut in the ground for the loop detector is a suitable distance from the barrier housing; a channel cut too close will still be detecting the vehicle as the boom comes down, leaving the system permanently open. Cables should preferably enter the barrier plinth from below; ducts entering from the side take in water over time and are the silent cause of control board failures.
