What Is Flat Wrap Razor Wire?

Flat wrap razor wire is made like any other razor wire — a blade-toothed galvanized strip pressed and wrapped onto a steel core wire — except that its loops are clipped together so they stay in one single plane. In the trade it also goes by flat razor wire, straight coil razor wire or simply flat wrap. What sets it apart from the concertina product is its form: pulled out, it does not open into a cylinder but into an almost flat band of interlocking loops.

That flat form is exactly what makes it ideal for tight lines. On top of a garden wall, along a roof parapet or as the crown of a fence, it takes up only a few centimetres of depth and never overhangs the pavement or the neighbouring plot. The trade-off is volume: with so little of it in the air, it is a weaker physical barrier than concertina, and most of its deterrent value comes from the blades themselves.

Flat Wrap and Concertina Razor Wire Compared

Where you cannot decide, the test is simple: if there is free space on both sides of the line, go for concertina razor wire; if there is not, flat wrap is the one. Many projects use both together — concertina along the rear boundary of the site, flat wrap on the elevation facing the street.

Variants and Blade Types

The flat wrap coils we hold are stocked galvanized in Ø45 cm, Ø60 cm and Ø90 cm diameters. The other headings that separate one product from another:

Blade type

• BTO-22: Blade length of roughly 22 mm, closely spaced teeth. The most common choice on wall-top work.
• BTO-30: A longer tooth; medium to high security level.
• CBT-60/65: Long, wide blade with strong visual deterrence.

Coating

Standard production is galvanized. Electro-galvanizing carries roughly 20-40 g/m² of zinc, hot-dip galvanizing roughly 45-90 g/m². In damp, salty or industrially polluted locations, hot-dip is the one to specify. Stainless (304) production is also possible where the job calls for it.

Clip spacing

The steel clips that hold the loops in plane define the character of the product. The tighter the clip spacing, the more rigid the band stands and the less the loops spread apart; the wider it gets, the cheaper the product becomes and the more readily it loses its form.

The figures below are approximate values for standard production; they shift with blade type and clip spacing.

Where Is It Used?

• Garden and housing estate wall tops: Because it does not overhang, it is the most widely chosen solution on street and pavement elevations.
• Roof and terrace parapets: Stops attempts to climb across onto the roof from the side.
• Crowns of panel fence and chain link fence: Added as a flat band on top of the existing system.
• Rear elevations of warehouses, shops and business premises: Loses no space in tight gaps.
• Pipeline, channel and shaft perimeters: Can also be laid out horizontally.
• Temporary site and event area boundaries.

If a fence is already in place, the product is normally mounted as a top crown over panel fence or galvanized chain link fence. If you are looking at a lower risk level and a more economical answer, barbed wire may be the alternative.

Sizing and Running Metres

Working out running metres is simpler with flat wrap than with concertina, because the band lies largely straight:

1. Measure the wall or fence line to be covered, in metres.
2. Divide it by the extended length of the diameter you have chosen to get the number of coils. If a Ø60 coil gives about 12 metres, a 120-metre line needs 10 coils.
3. Add an overlap allowance of around 5% for the joints.
4. Allow close to half a metre of loss at every corner; the loops bunch up on the turn.

Diameter is chosen to suit the width of the surface being protected: Ø45 for the typical 20-25 cm thick garden wall, Ø60 for wider parapets and industrial walls, Ø90 for broad crowns where high security is called for. The measure of the right choice, legally as much as visually, is that the band does not overhang the edge of the wall.

What Determines the Price of Flat Wrap Razor Wire?

Pricing is based on extended metres (linear metres) or on the coil. The items that decide it:

• Loop diameter: A Ø90 product carries far more strip and wire than a Ø45.
• Blade type: The long CBT blades push up sheet consumption.
• Clip count and labour: Closely clipped production costs more, but it holds its form.
• Coating class: Hot-dip galvanizing raises the initial cost and lowers the total cost of ownership.
• Steel grade and core wire diameter.
• Order quantity: The unit price comes down on high running metres.
• Freight: The bulk of the coils and the distance to be covered set the carriage charge.

All prices shown in the table on this page include VAT. Within Ankara site surveys are free of charge, but delivery is charged and deliveries inside Ankara are subject to that charge as well.

How Is It Installed?

1. Protective equipment: Cut-resistant leather gloves, heavy long-sleeved workwear and goggles are essential. A razor product is never handled with bare hands.
2. Surface preparation: Loose mortar and render on the wall top are cleaned off and the fixing points are marked out.
3. Fixings: Galvanized L brackets, U clamps or plugged base plates are fitted at 1.5-2 m centres. On chain link fence, the existing post extensions are used.
4. Tension wire: A 2.5-3 mm galvanized tension wire is run along both the front and the rear edge of the band. Two lines of tension are what keep the band in plane.
5. Rolling out the coil: The coil is set down at the head of the line, the first end is fixed and the band is opened along the line under control. The ties are never all cut at once.
6. Tying: The loops are tied to the tension wire with tie wire or U clips every 40-50 cm. Equal spacing is held along the whole band.
7. Joining: The ends of two coils are overlapped by 2-3 loops and clipped together; no gap is left at the joint.
8. Final check: Sag, sprung loops, loose plugs and sharp protrusions are checked over, and warning signs are put up.

Maintenance, Service Life and Legal Warning

Galvanized flat wrap razor wire runs virtually maintenance-free. Under normal climatic conditions, expect a service life of 5-10 years from an electro-galvanized product and upwards of 15-20 years from hot-dip galvanized. A visual inspection once a year should find loosened clips, broken tie wires and oxidised cut ends so they can be repaired; seal the cut ends with a zinc-based spray and rust will not travel.

Legal warning: Razor wire is a product capable of causing injury. Using it in residential areas, on elevations open to pedestrian traffic and on low walls creates liability; the property owner can be held responsible, in proportion to their fault, for harm suffered by third parties. The product must be positioned out of reach by hand (the generally accepted minimum is 2.2-2.5 m), must not overhang the pavement or the neighbouring plot, and visible warning signs must be present along the line. On housing estates and in apartment blocks, the management decision and the local planning rules must be checked beforehand. Responsibility for where the product is used rests with the user.
