What is PVC coated chain link fence?

PVC coated chain link fence is a perimeter material made by drawing a plastic sleeve over galvanized steel wire and weaving it into a diamond mesh. It carries two protective layers, the zinc coating on the wire and the PVC sleeve over it, which keep the steel away from moisture, irrigation water, fertiliser and salt air.

Our stock size in the Ostim warehouse is 150 cm high × 20 metre rolls, wire thickness 2.2 mm and 2.5 mm, mesh aperture 5×5 cm and 6×6 cm, colour green. Green is the most requested colour for garden and land perimeters, sitting well against planting.

Technical specifications

The roll is flexible, so it follows the ground on sloping and uneven land, unlike rigid, resistance welded systems.

The difference between PVC coated and galvanized

On galvanized chain link fence the only protection is zinc, and it is used up over time, above all in damp conditions. Here the plastic sleeve insulates the zinc and gives the fence a neat, well kept look. Being soft to the touch, it also suits schools, parks and playgrounds.

• Choose PVC coated for: coastal and humid regions, gardens on drip irrigation, greenhouse surrounds, villa and estate gardens, schools, parks and playgrounds, and animal shelters.
• Galvanized is enough for: land boundaries in dry climates, temporary site fencing and long field runs where appearance is not a priority.

Watch one detail: on PVC coated wire the size is usually the outside diameter including the coating, so the galvanized wire inside is somewhat thinner. Keep that in mind when comparing products of the same nominal size, and call us before ordering if you want it confirmed.

Chain link fence or panel fence?

PVC coated chain link fence comes in rolls, is installed under tension and costs little per square metre, an advantage on long boundaries and sloping land. Panel fence arrives as ready made panels, needs no tensioning and holds its line for years, but costs more per unit.

Panel fence along the visible front and PVC coated mesh on the side and rear boundaries balances budget and appearance.

• Boundaries of schools, nurseries, parks and playgrounds
• Greenhouses, plant nurseries and gardens on drip irrigation
• Land fencing on the coast and in humid regions
• Animal shelters, paddocks and poultry runs

• Pool surrounds and green area divisions inside an estate

Where higher security is needed, barbed wire can be added on top with 45 degree extension arms on the post tops.

How many rolls and how many posts?

For a material list you need only the perimeter length and the post spacing:

• Number of rolls = perimeter length ÷ 20
• Number of posts = (perimeter length ÷ post spacing) + 1
• Tension wire = perimeter length × 3 rows

Example: for a garden measuring 40 × 20 metres the perimeter is 2 × (40 + 20) = 120 metres.

1. Chain link: 120 ÷ 20 = 6 rolls. One spare roll covers joins and waste.
2. Posts: at 2.5 m spacing, 120 ÷ 2.5 = 48, +1 = 49 posts. At 3 m spacing, roughly 41 posts.
3. Tension wire: 120 × 3 = 360 metres.
4. Brace posts for the four corners and one gate are worked out separately.

On soil the economical, long lasting choice is a concrete post; on a parapet, kerb or existing wall a flanged steel tube post is used. Green posts suit PVC coated mesh, so the fence reads as one piece.

What determines the price of PVC coated chain link fence?

The price follows the steel content and the coating quality. The determining items:

• Wire thickness: 2.2 mm or 2.5 mm changes the steel weight per square metre.
• Mesh aperture: a 5×5 cm mesh is tighter than a 6×6 cm one and holds more wire.
• PVC coating thickness and quality: high UV resistance lasts longer and costs more.
• The steel market: wire rod prices and the exchange rate move the price weekly.
• Running metres: the unit price falls as the number of rolls rises.
• Ancillary materials: posts, tension wire, tie wire and gates are separate items.
• Shipping: total weight and distance set the carriage cost; delivery is charged.

How is it tensioned and installed?

Installation follows the same logic as galvanized mesh; the only difference is care not to damage the coating. The correct order:

1. Setting out: a string line is run along the boundary and post positions marked at 2.5–3 metre intervals.
2. Setting the posts: a concrete post is buried roughly 40–50 cm deep; for a tube post a 40×40 cm hole is dug and concreted. Braces are essential on corner and gate posts, which carry the tension load.
3. Curing time: nothing is tensioned before the posts have set; wait at least 24–48 hours.
4. Tension wire: three rows of straight wire — bottom, middle, top — are run and pulled up with a wire strainer. PVC coated tension wire keeps the look consistent.
5. Unrolling: the roll is fixed to the corner post and rolled out along the line; the mesh is never dragged on the ground, which scratches the coating.
6. Tying: the mesh is tied to the tension wires with clips or tie wire at 40–50 cm intervals. Over tightened tie wire crushes the PVC, so tighten in moderation.
7. Final tensioning: the strainers are pulled up until no sag is left, the excess cut off and the cut ends turned inwards.

On projects of approximately 1000 metres and above our installation team comes to site. On smaller jobs we send the product out and give technical support by phone.

Maintenance and service life

PVC coated chain link fence needs no maintenance in practice. Dirty sections wash off with water; no paint, oiling or rust remover is needed. Its life is set by the integrity of the coating.

• Steel is exposed at cut ends; uncovered, they let moisture work in.
• Avoid hard contact that scratches the coating (machinery, strimmers, dragging).
• Keeping the bottom edge a few centimetres above ground, out of the soil, extends its life.
• A slack fence moves in the wind and wears the coating at the tie points.

Our main business is selling and shipping products. Once your order is in, rolls are prepared from stock and sent from our Ostim warehouse to all 81 provinces by courier or freight. The method follows the total weight and is stated in the quotation: a few rolls by courier, pallet quantities by freight.

If you are in Ankara, the site survey is free; we see the site and choose the right product for your dimensions and ground. Even so, delivery is charged, within Ankara as well; carriage is never included in the price. All prices include VAT.
