What Is a Louvre Fence?

A louvre fence is a modern perimeter system made up of aluminium slats threaded horizontally between vertical support posts, closing off most of the elevation. It takes its name from the fact that its profile looks like a window shutter. The slats are interlocking sections; they are stacked in order from the bottom up, and each slat locks into the one above it to form a surface that works as a single piece against the wind.

What separates a louvre fence from panel or mesh systems is that its job is not only to mark a boundary: it delivers privacy, wind screening and a clean architectural line at the same time. It is the first choice for homeowners who want to screen their garden from the neighbours or the street without building a wall. Louvre Fence Heights and Colour

Four standard heights are held in stock: 100 cm, 150 cm, 180 cm and 200 cm. There is a single colour, RAL 7016 anthracite, applied as an oven-baked electrostatic powder coating.

How Do You Choose the Height?

100 cm is used where the aim is to define a boundary rather than hide behind it: dividing up a garden, edging a terrace, enclosing a pool area, separating planted zones. 150 cm is the balanced height that closes off the garden frontage without cutting the property off from the street entirely. 180 cm rises above the eye level of a standing adult and gives full privacy; it is the most popular size for villa gardens. 200 cm is used where the neighbouring building sits higher, or on frontages that face a road or a busy public space.

Why RAL 7016?

RAL 7016 anthracite grey has become the de facto standard shade in the facade and joinery trade. Being dark, it does not show dust and water marks the way white and cream tones do, it sets up a strong contrast with the green of the planting so the landscaping comes forward, and it matches easily with other metalwork such as window frames, doors and railings.

The slats are made of aluminium; being light, they put little dead load on the posts, and because aluminium oxidises to form its own protective skin it carries none of the creeping rust risk you get with steel. The supporting posts are galvanized and powder coated steel tube posts.

Privacy and Wind: How Much Does a Louvre Fence Actually Close Off?

A louvre fence can be built in two different arrangements, and the level of privacy changes accordingly:

• Closely stacked (fully closed) arrangement: the slats are threaded with no gaps at all, giving a coverage of 95-100%. From the outside the garden is invisible. This is the closest thing to a wall, but the full wind load is transferred to the posts.
• Spaced (ventilated) arrangement: a 15-25 mm gap is left between the slats, giving a coverage of 70-85%. It still blocks any clear view from outside, but it lets air through, reduces wind pressure and does not choke the air circulation around the planting.

On exposed, elevated or open sites, the spaced arrangement is the technically sounder choice. A fully closed louvre fence collects many times the wind load of a panel fence of the same height, which is why the post spacing must never be pushed beyond 2 metres.

Where Is a Louvre Fence Used?

• Villa and detached house gardens: it closes off the street frontage without looking as heavy as a wall.
• Around pools and terraces: it breaks the wind and screens the seating area from outside.
• Communal areas in residential compounds: hiding service zones such as bin stores, generators and air-conditioning condensers.
• Cafe and hotel gardens: it creates a visual separation from passing traffic.
• Business premises and warehouse frontages: it stops stock and equipment inside being visible from the road.
• Dividing up a garden: at 100 cm it separates a vegetable plot, a parking bay or a children's play area; where a softer boundary is wanted it can be combined with artificial grass fence.

Working Out the Linear Meters: How Much Louvre Fence Do You Need?

Louvre fence is sold by the linear meter. A linear meter means 1 metre of horizontal run at the height you have chosen; in other words the height is already in the rate and all you have to work out is the length of the line.

Linear meters = length of the line to be enclosed - width of gates and openings

1. Measure the line: the perimeter of a 20 x 15 metre garden = (20 + 15) x 2 = 70 metres.
2. Deduct what will not be enclosed: a 3.5 metre vehicle gate + a 1 metre pedestrian gate = 4.5 metres. 70 - 4.5 = 65.5 linear meters of louvre fence.
3. Find the number of posts: number of posts = (65.5 ÷ 2) + 1 = 33.75 → 34 steel tube posts. If you have chosen 180 cm louvre, they need to be 250 cm long.
4. Check the slat quantity: at 180 cm there are roughly 18 rows of slats per metre, so the total slat length is 65.5 x 18 ≈ 1179 metres. We do this calculation for you when we confirm the order.
5. Wastage allowance: add 3-5% to the total linear meters for cuts and corners.

At corners the slats are either mitre cut or picked up by a corner profile, so on a line with a lot of corners it is safer to take the wastage allowance at the top of the range.

Louvre Fence Installation: Step by Step

1. Set out the line: run a string line between the two ends. Because a louvre fence is a solid surface, even the smallest deviation in the line is obvious when you look along it.
2. Set the posts: in soil, concrete them into a 30x30 cm, 50-60 cm deep hole using a C16-C20 mix. On a concrete surface, use flanged steel tube posts and fix them at four points with M10-M12 steel anchors. Post spacing must not exceed 1.5-2 metres.
3. Wait for the concrete to cure: allow the concrete at least 48-72 hours to cure before you start fitting slats. A loaded closed elevation puts immediate strain on a foundation that has not yet cured.
4. Fit the bottom guide / starter profile: the level of the first row sets the level of the whole elevation. Do not move on to the second row before checking it with a spirit level.
5. Thread the slats in: slide each slat into the inner channel of the posts from the side and press it down until it seats in the locking channel of the slat below. Never use a steel hammer where a slat is tight; tap it home gently with a rubber mallet. Work in sequence from the bottom up.
6. Use a spacing jig: if you are building the ventilated arrangement, work with a packer of the same thickness between the slats; gaps left by eye read as a wavy line across the elevation.
7. Fit the top capping profile: a finishing profile goes over the last row; it completes the look and stops the top slat moving.
8. Close off corners and terminations: use mitre cuts or corner profiles at the corners, and file off the sharp edges left by cutting.

What Determines the Cost of a Louvre Fence?

Our prices include VAT and are quoted per linear meter.

• Height: the amount of slat used per linear meter doubles between 100 cm and 200 cm; this is the first item that sets the price.
• Slat section and wall thickness: the wall thickness of the aluminium profile creates a serious difference in cost and strength between two products that look identical.
• Type of arrangement: a fully closed arrangement consumes more slat than a spaced one at the same height.
• Choice of support post: post length, section and whether it is flanged all feed into the total; posts are priced as a separate item.
• Accessories: starter profile, top capping profile, corner profile and gate solutions are added according to the project.
• Running meters: unit cost falls on bulk linear meter orders.
• Shipping: freight is shown separately in the quotation according to distance, volume and unloading conditions.

Maintenance, Service Life and Türkiye-Wide Delivery

Unlike steel, an aluminium slat forms its own protective oxide layer at the surface, and the powder coating protects that surface against UV and rain on top of it. Maintenance amounts to wiping it down once or twice a year with water and a mild detergent. Abrasive pads, wire brushes and solvents such as thinner must not be used; they dull the powder coated surface. Scratches made during installation can be touched in with RAL 7016 repair paint. Under normal conditions the expected service life is 20-25 years, and because it is aluminium it also has the edge over steel systems in salty environments such as the coast.
