The visual cost of fencing on lakeside plots

In Gölbaşı, the fencing decision is tied to the view more than in any other district. On the plots around Mogan and Eymir the outlook is part of what the land is worth, and a line chosen without protecting that outlook ends up shutting off the garden's strongest asset.

This is why a single fence type rarely suits the whole plot here. The frontage facing the road usually needs to screen, while the side facing the lake or open land needs a line that preserves the view. Using two different solutions on one plot is not the exception in this district; it is the normal choice.

Whether the garden is used seasonally or all year round also shapes the decision. In a villa lived in continuously, the fence becomes part of daily life; in a vineyard house used for only part of the year, the priority is that the plot holds its own while nobody is there.

Because plots in the area are generally large, the meterage comes out higher than expected. A job that ends in a few dozen metres in a city garden can reach several hundred metres here. At that scale a small difference in unit price turns into a noticeable difference in the total, which is why the whole run should be measured before the decision is made.

Post spacing on open, wind-exposed land

The land around the lake is open and directly exposed to wind. This is the most underestimated load on a fence line. Wind presses against the face of the fence and the entire force is transferred to the posts and their ground connection. A closed-face line is put under far more strain than a permeable one in the same wind.

Two things therefore change on open land: post spacing is reduced and embedment depth is increased. Steel tube posts are often preferred in these conditions, both for their light weight and for quick installation over long runs; the section and wall thickness are selected according to the height of the line.

Corners and end points are where a run is stressed most. As long as a line runs straight the load stays balanced, but at a turn the force acts in one direction only. Fitting a brace at these points prevents the line from leaning a few years down the road.

Seasonal use in vineyard houses and hobby gardens

The district has a high concentration of vineyard houses and hobby gardens. What these plots have in common is that they stand empty for part of the year. In an empty garden what is asked of a fence is not appearance but durability and tolerance of neglect.

One of the products that fits this brief best is PVC coated chain link fence. The coating protects the wire from moisture and salt effects, and it lasts longer than bare wire around the lake where irrigation and rainfall are heavy. The green-toned coating also recedes visually within planting.

A common mistake in hobby gardens is running the line only around the outer boundary. The vegetable area, the poultry section or the part with fruit saplings usually needs its own protection as well. Planning this from the start saves a second order and a second delivery charge.

Then there is wildlife. Foxes, dogs and rodents crossing into gardens around the lake is a known issue. On plots like these the bottom of the line is what matters: if a gap is left at ground level, the height of the fence counts for nothing. Burying the bottom edge or fixing it at ground level is the detail that makes the biggest difference across a season.

Marking a boundary without blocking the view

On a plot where the outlook is to be preserved, the fence works psychologically: it shows where the boundary ends and discourages casual entry without cutting off the view. Panel fence suits this purpose; its fine wire structure fades visually from a distance while reading clearly up close.

If screening is wanted, it is wiser to apply it only to the frontage that needs it rather than to the whole line. Bringing in artificial grass fence on the section facing the road or sitting close to the neighbouring plot closes off that frontage, while the rest of the run is left open.

Colour choice matters more here than people expect. Natural greens and dark tones blend into the land; bright, light colours draw the eye to the line across open ground and make the plot look narrower than it is.

Vehicle access and gate choice on large plots

On wide plots the entrance is the most used and most worn point of the whole line. When setting the gate width, it is not only the car that should be considered but the delivery vehicle, pick-up or tractor that will come to the garden. An entrance chosen too narrow turns into a widening request within a few years.

On soil ground and wide openings a field gate is a practical solution. Its plain construction keeps maintenance low and its wide leaf allows large vehicles through.

On sloping entrances the direction the leaf swings needs separate thought. A leaf that opens uphill soon starts to catch on the ground; setting the gate to open in the direction of the slope solves this from the outset. The gate post should also be stronger than a line post, because the entire weight of the leaf is carried there.

The position of the entrance affects the life of the line too. An entrance set at a slight angle rather than square to the road makes manoeuvring easier and reduces the risk of striking the leaf. It also helps if the ground at the entrance sits slightly higher than its surroundings, so water does not pool in front of the gate after rain.

Measuring with slope, level changes and turns

Plots in Gölbaşı are generally not flat. Gently sloping land is common, and this makes estimating meterage by eye misleading. The true length of a sloping run is greater than the length that appears on a map.

Three things should be noted while measuring: how many turning points the line has, the approximate angle of each turn, and how many different levels the line runs across. These three pieces of information directly determine the number of posts and the need for bracing.

Site survey is free within Ankara. On large plots, walking the line together and measuring on site gives a far more accurate result than calculations made remotely; irrigation lines, tree positions and existing walls that affect the run are also seen on the same visit.
