In Ayaş the Size of the Plot Decides the Fencing

Ayaş is 55 km from our Ostim warehouse and we work the district on a 1-2 business days dispatch window. The pattern of production here is distinctive: fertile valley-floor land, vegetable and fruit growing, greenhouses and nursery beds, and mostly family-scale holdings. That pattern feeds straight into how a perimeter should be planned.

On small, fragmented plots the boundary is long in relation to the area it encloses. Fencing a one-decare orchard therefore costs several times more per decare than fencing a ten-decare field. In Ayaş that makes restraint as important as product choice: putting in more system than the plot needs is the commonest way money disappears. Below we take greenhouses, nurseries, orchards and irrigation areas one at a time.

Perimeters and Ancillary Products on Greenhouse Sites

Two separate jobs get confused in greenhouse work. The first is the outer boundary of the plot the greenhouse stands on; that is conventional fencing, where durability and gate width come first. The second is the greenhouse's own ventilation openings, and there the requirement is something else entirely.

Ventilation openings take insect screen, which keeps whitefly and similar pests out without choking the airflow. Choosing the aperture means balancing the size of the target pest against the air movement you need: a very tight weave holds pests better but pushes summer temperatures up inside the house. To cut light intensity through the hottest months, growers turn to shade net; the shade factor is chosen crop by crop, because seedlings and mature plants do not want the same light.

With both products the fitting decides as much as the specification. Screen and net must be pulled taut and fixed continuously along the edge of the opening; a few centimetres left open in a corner creates an entry point that makes the whole surface pointless. On shade net the number of fixing points is what matters: netting tied at too few points flaps in the wind and starts tearing at the eyelets. Taking the net down dry at the end of the season and storing it is the simplest way to get a second year out of it.

The Mesh That Will Protect Young Nursery Stock

A nursery is the most exposed site of all where wildlife is concerned; a mature tree survives being gnawed, a young whip does not. Rabbits and similar rodents strip the bark, roe deer break off the new growth. That is why nursery lines run a small mesh aperture, with the bottom band tightened up further still.

The usual answer on site is to run galvanised chain link fence along the line and reinforce the bottom 50-60 cm with a tighter mesh. Burying the bottom edge 20 cm into the ground also rules out the species that dig their way in. A height of 1.5 m is enough for most nurseries; where roe deer pressure is known, you need to go up to 1.8 m.

An Economical Line Layout on Small, Fragmented Plots

On the small plots down in the valley the budget disappears into perimeter length very quickly. Two practical approaches earn their keep here. The first is to rank the line: a stronger system on the frontage facing the road and the neighbouring right of way, and a more economical solution on the rear elevation already protected by a natural barrier, brings the total down noticeably.

The second is product choice. On long, straight runs a welded mesh panel goes up quickly and stays economical per metre; it is unrolled and drawn along the tension wire. If there is any chance the plot will be divided or the boundary moved later, being able to take it down and re-erect it elsewhere is a further advantage. On permanent orchards and road frontages, by contrast, stepping up to a more durable system means less maintenance over the years.

Shared boundaries with neighbouring plots are a separate matter on small holdings. Running two lines along the common frontage of two adjoining gardens means paying to do the same job twice. If you can come to an arrangement with the neighbour, a single line cuts the running meters and with them the cost. In that case settle from the outset whether the line sits exactly on the boundary or to one side of it, and who carries the maintenance; taking it down and rebuilding it later costs far more than the saving was worth.

Protecting the Irrigation Line and the Water Tank Area

In Ayaş the irrigation infrastructure is the backbone of production, and it is usually the thing left out when a perimeter is planned. An open tank, a reservoir or the ground around the irrigation pump deserves separate treatment, for safety as much as for loss. Fencing the small compound holding the pump and the electrical panel in its own right, independent of the plot's main line, is a common and effective approach.

Where there is open water on the plot the line has to be closed in and difficult to climb, for the sake of children and livestock. Because these internal runs are short, moving up to a better, tighter-mesh product barely shifts the overall figure. Where an irrigation pipe crosses the fence line, take care not to run it through a post footing and leave it a separate crossing instead. A protective sleeve at that point removes any need to break concrete when the pipe eventually has to be replaced, and lets you work on it without disturbing the integrity of the line.

Gate Width and Post Loading at the Orchard Entrance

Gates on Ayaş holdings have to pass tractors, trailers, sprayers and harvest vehicles. A 3 m clear opening is tight for that traffic; 4-5 m works comfortably on most holdings. Where the gate opens onto a narrow orchard track, go up one size to leave room to manoeuvre.

At these widths a field gate suits agricultural use; its light frame is an advantage on unmade ground. The real problem with any gate is the load the leaf puts on the post. Gate posts should be a concrete post or a heavier section than the line posts, with the footing dug at least 20 cm deeper than those along the run. Skip that and the post leans forward over time until the leaf no longer meets the latch.

On greenhouse and nursery sites the survey covers not only the perimeter but the dimensions of the ventilation openings, so the net and screen quantities come out in one pass.
