What is welded mesh panel and where is it used?

Welded mesh panel is a mesh material made by laying plain galvanized wires over one another at right angles and joining them at every intersection with a resistance (spot) weld, sold in flat panel form. The trade also calls it spot welded mesh, mesh panel or simply welded mesh. That is its biggest difference from chain link: the wires are not interwoven, they are welded. So the product does not stretch, needs no tensioning and forms a rigid, self-supporting surface.

We sell welded mesh panel from our warehouse as flat panels, by the piece. Stock comes in three options, 3×3 cm aperture 120×240 cm, 4×4 cm aperture 120×240 cm and 4×4 cm aperture 100×200 cm, all galvanized. It is the standard material for work that gets cut and shaped: cages, partitions, poultry housing, cage floors, guard baskets, shelving and small enclosures.

Being a flat sheet, the panel takes up room in transport and stacking; it does not fold up the way roll goods do. That practical detail affects both how it ships and how you plan to unload it on site.

3×3 cm or 4×4 cm? Choosing the mesh aperture

The aperture settles two things at once: what you stop getting through, and how stiff the panel is.

  • 3×3 cm aperture: A tighter weave. The same panel area carries more wire and more weld points, so it is stiffer and holds small-bodied animals. It suits poultry houses, cages, bird and rabbit pens, places where rodents must be kept out, and partitions likely to be pushed by hand. As it stops fingers passing through, it also suits machine guard cages and panels behind shelving.
  • 4×4 cm aperture: An opener weave, holding less wire for the same area and therefore more economical. It is enough for general partitioning, splitting a warehouse, ivy and plant supports, light enclosures, separators in concrete work and basket or gabion cages.

Ask yourself one question: what is the smallest object or creature you want kept behind the panel? If it can pass through the aperture, go down a size. A thinner wire with a tighter aperture usually gives a more useful surface than a thick wire with an open aperture.

120×240 cm or 100×200 cm? Choosing the panel size

Two of the three stock items measure 120×240 cm and one 100×200 cm. The choice is entirely about cutting down waste.

  • 120×240 cm (2.88 m²): The big panel. It covers wide surfaces with few joints, meaning fewer connections and less labour. For a partition 120 cm high you can use it without cutting at all. It is hard for one person to carry.
  • 100×200 cm (2.00 m²): The easier size to handle, going into a pickup bed and up a narrow stairwell far more comfortably. It works without waste where 100 cm of height is enough and on cage work dividing into 50 cm / 100 cm modules.

A practical method: draw the part you are making on paper and try laying it out on both panels. Cutting 50×50 cm pieces, for example, a 100×200 cm panel yields exactly 8 with no waste at all; the same job on a 120×240 cm panel leaves offcuts around the edges. For 60×80 cm pieces, the 120×240 cm panel is the more efficient one.

How many panels do you need? A worked example

As welded mesh panel is sold by the piece, the soundest way to work it out is by area:

  1. Calculate the area of the surface to be covered (length × height).
  2. Divide it by the area of the panel you have chosen: 2.88 m² for 120×240 cm, 2.00 m² for 100×200 cm.
  3. Round up and add an allowance for cutting waste.

Example 1 — enclosure: a partition 30 metres long and 120 cm high. The area is 30 × 1.2 = 36 m². With 120×240 cm panels, 36 ÷ 2.88 = 12.5, so 13 pieces are needed. If the panels are lapped 3–5 cm as they are set side by side, add one more.

Example 2 — building a cage: the base, top and four sides of a cage measuring 100×50×50 cm come to roughly 2.5 m². You will need two 100×200 cm panels (2 m² each); one is not enough, because offcuts left after cutting are not always usable.

Cutting waste should not be underestimated on this product. On complex parts 10–15% waste is normal; on straightforward partition work 5% is enough.

Cutting, joining and fixing

The biggest advantage of welded mesh panel is how readily it takes shape, but a few rules apply.

Cutting

Cut immediately beside the weld point, through the middle of a single wire. Cutting across the weld releases that aperture completely and the edge unravels. Pliers or fencing pincers are enough; an angle grinder burns the zinc off along the cut, and that edge must be sealed with galvanizing spray. Do not leave cut ends pointing outwards; that is where hand injuries come from.

Joining

Panels are joined with galvanized tie wire, clips (C-rings) or bolted clamps. The strongest method is to lap two panels by one aperture and tie them every 15–20 cm. On permanent work spot welding is possible, but every welded point leaves bare steel and, unpainted, rust starts there.

Fixing

Being rigid, the panel needs no tension wire; it is clamped straight to a post, a section or a wall. Keep the bottom edge 3–5 cm clear of the ground, as zinc runs out fastest along an edge that stays permanently wet.

All three are mesh surfaces, but they are made for different jobs:

  • Welded mesh panel: For small and medium work that is cut and shaped. It comes as a flat panel, is sold by the piece and does not stretch, the most practical option for cages, partitions, poultry housing and guard surfaces.
  • Galvanized chain link fence: For long runs. It comes in rolls, is flexible, follows the slope of the ground and must be pulled up with a tension wire. On a 100 metre field boundary you use chain link, not welded mesh panel; otherwise cost and labour both multiply.
  • Panel fence: Made on the same spot-welding principle, but with heavy wire, omega (V) stiffeners and factory powder coating. It is the product for permanent perimeters where appearance and strength are wanted together: housing estates, schools, factories. Welded mesh panel is no substitute.

If a finer wire and a tighter aperture are specifically wanted for poultry, galvanized chicken wire is the better material, and for sieving and filtering it is screen mesh. If you need an aperture, wire diameter or PVC coated finish outside the stock sizes, production shifts to galvanized and PVC coated welded mesh; that product is made to order.

What determines the price of welded mesh panel?

The price is not a fixed list but a result of the steel in the panel and the current market. The deciding items are these:

  • Mesh aperture: Over the same panel area, a 3×3 cm aperture holds appreciably more wire and weld points than a 4×4 cm one.
  • Wire diameter: The factor that directly sets panel weight; a heavy-wire panel always costs more.
  • Panel size: A 120×240 cm panel gives 2.88 m², a 100×200 cm panel 2.00 m². Comparing prices per piece, look at it per square metre.
  • Zinc coating weight: The heavier the coating, the longer the life and the higher the cost.
  • The steel market: Raw material prices and the exchange rate feed into unit price week by week.
  • Quantity: Unit price falls as quantity rises; pallet-quantity orders are priced separately.
  • Shipping: Panels are bulky; total weight, volume and distance set the carriage cost. Delivery is charged.

Ordering, shipping and delivery terms

Our main business is selling and shipping product. You order by telephone or through the contact form; panels in stock are prepared and sent from our warehouse in Ostim anywhere in Türkiye by courier or freight depot. Small quantities can go by courier; as the panel size is large, orders above a certain quantity are palletised and sent by freight. The route depends on quantity and is stated clearly in the quotation.

If you are in Ankara, site survey is free: we see the site and settle on size, aperture and quantity together. That said, delivery is always charged, including within Ankara; the courier or freight cost is worked out from order weight and distance, and shown as a separate line in the quotation.

Installation is not a standard service. Our teams attend site on perimeter projects of approximately 1000 metres and above; on smaller jobs we ship the product and give telephone technical support wherever you get stuck cutting and joining.

What sizes is welded mesh panel sold in?

There are three options in stock: 3×3 cm aperture 120×240 cm, 4×4 cm aperture 120×240 cm and 4×4 cm aperture 100×200 cm. All of them are galvanized and sold by the piece (per panel).

Should I choose a 3×3 cm or a 4×4 cm mesh aperture?

The 3×3 cm aperture is a tighter weave; it is preferred for poultry houses, cages, bird and rabbit pens and anywhere rodents have to be kept out, and it is stiffer as well. The 4×4 cm aperture holds less wire over the same area, so it is more economical and does the job for general partitioning, splitting a warehouse and light enclosures.

How do I work out how many panels to buy?

Find the area of the surface to be covered and divide it by the panel area: a 120×240 cm panel gives 2.88 m², a 100×200 cm panel 2.00 m². A partition 30 metres long and 120 cm high, for example, comes to 36 m²; with 120×240 cm panels you need 13 pieces. Add 5% waste on straightforward work and 10-15% where the cutting is complex.

What is the difference between welded mesh panel and chain link?

In welded mesh panel the wires are joined at every intersection by a spot weld; the product is a flat panel, it does not stretch and it needs no tensioning. In chain link the wires are woven into one another; it comes in rolls, it is flexible and it has to be pulled up with a tension wire. Welded mesh panel is right for small work that is cut and shaped, chain link for long boundary runs.
