Grass Fence Systems

How the carrier, height and quantities are chosen for artificial grass fencing, with two worked examples and the information required for an accurate quotation.

What buyers actually need to decide before asking for a price

Most enquiries that reach us open with the same question: what is the price per metre? It is the wrong place to start. The cost of a perimeter is set by two things — how many metres it runs, and what the fence is expected to do. Does it only mark a boundary, or does it also have to block the view? Is it exposed to open wind, or sheltered between buildings? Once those two answers exist, the specification follows almost by itself.

Grass fence systems sit in a specific gap in the catalogue. A plain chain link mesh marks a line but leaves everything behind it visible. A masonry wall closes the view completely, but it needs a foundation, it is heavy, and it cannot be moved. What buyers usually describe as a green fence, or simply a privacy fence, is this middle option. Artificial grass strips threaded through a carrier mesh close the surface while keeping the cost close to that of ordinary fencing, and the whole assembly can be dismantled and reinstalled elsewhere.

This guide covers what the product is, how the height is chosen, how many rolls and posts a given perimeter needs, and what information a supplier needs from you before quoting. What grass fence systems are and what carries them

The material itself is not a structure. Artificial grass strips are threaded into the openings of a carrier mesh, which means there is always something underneath holding the assembly up. That carrier comes in one of two forms: mesh supplied in rolls, or rigid welded panels.

Rolls in our range are 10 metres long, with carrier openings between 45x45 and 48x48 millimetres. Height options are 50, 75, 100, 120, 150, 180 and 200 centimetres. Those steps are not arbitrary. The 50 and 75 centimetre heights are used for separation and landscaping work, 100 to 150 centimetres for garden perimeters, and 180 to 200 centimetres where blocking the line of sight is the main requirement.

On the panel side the logic changes. Our panel fence sheets are 250 centimetres wide, made from 4 millimetre wire with 50x200 millimetre apertures, finished in RAL 6005 green. Because the carrier is rigid, no tensioning is required, but installation follows panel sequencing rather than the roll method.

Choosing the height

Within grass fence systems, height is the decision buyers most often revisit after installation. Too low and the screening effect never appears; too high and both material consumption and wind load rise.

If the requirement is simply a visible boundary, 100 centimetres is enough in most gardens. If the point is that nobody sees in from the road or the neighbouring plot, the fence has to clear eye level, and 180 centimetres is the realistic starting point. At 150 centimetres the result is usually a half solution: it screens from a distance and fails at close range.

Sloping ground adds a further allowance. On a gradient the fence steps down in sections, and a gap opens under each step. Selecting one height class higher at the outset costs less than trying to close those gaps afterwards.

Three measurements to take before ordering grass fence systems

Write down three figures before you specify anything: the level difference between the highest and lowest point of the line, the distance from which the fence will normally be seen, and the prevailing wind direction. A level difference of more than half a metre pushes the height up one class. A fence people sit directly beside needs more screening than a boundary viewed from ten metres away. On an exposed slope, post spacing tightens as height increases.

Calculating rolls and posts

This is where ordering mistakes happen. Quantities for grass fence systems are calculated in three steps, and a tape measure and a sheet of paper are enough.

Step one, the perimeter. Add up every side of the area to be enclosed, then deduct the openings. A three metre vehicle gate is three metres less fencing. Plots close to square consume less material; long, narrow plots produce a longer perimeter for the same surface area.

Step two, roll count. Our rolls are 10 metres, so divide the perimeter by ten and add roughly five per cent for cutting and overlap. A hundred metre boundary works out at ten rolls, eleven once the allowance is added. Part rolls are not supplied, so the figure is always rounded up.

Step three, post count. With panel carriers the arithmetic is fixed: panels are 250 centimetres wide, so posts fall every 2.5 metres and a hundred metre run needs roughly 41 of them. With roll carriers the spacing is more flexible — tighter spacing holds the line taut, wider spacing lets the mesh sag over time. Posts are selected from the wire mesh and posts range: concrete posts in 200 and 240 centimetre lengths, steel tube posts in 150, 200 and 250 centimetre lengths, galvanised and coated.

A common error is matching post length to fence height. Part of every post goes into the ground, so posts are always longer than the fence itself; a 150 centimetre line starts with a 200 centimetre post.

A second worked example covers the most common residential case. A 500 square metre plot measuring roughly 25 by 20 metres has a 90 metre perimeter. Deduct a three metre vehicle gate and 87 metres of fencing remain: nine rolls, ten once the cutting allowance is applied, and around 36 posts on a panel carrier. Corners, gate posts and end posts are counted separately.

Where grass fence systems are used

Requirements differ sharply by application. Around private houses the driver is privacy, so height and strip density matter most, and the straight boundary suits a panel carrier. Around residential compounds the priority is visual consistency: one colour, one height, one clean line across the whole development.

Sports facilities are a more technical case. On pitches and courts the grass-strip section usually occupies the lower part of the enclosure, for screening and wind reduction, while the upper section is left to ball-stop netting or open mesh. Making that split at design stage is far cheaper than rebuilding later.

On construction sites and temporary compounds the requirements are speed, reusability and a closed surface. In hospitality and terrace projects grass fence systems are usually specified at lower heights as decorative dividers. Stating the application early settles both the height and the carrier in a single step.

Aperture, strip density and carrier quality

Two grass fence systems of the same height can behave very differently, and three factors explain most of it. The first is the aperture of the carrier: the smaller the openings, the more strips are threaded and the denser the screen. The second is strip density itself — a sparsely woven product looks inexpensive but does not block the view. The third is carrier wire quality, since that is the component actually carrying the load and holding its shape over the years.

Ordinary mesh is the useful reference point. Our galvanised rolls run from 2.0 to 3.0 millimetre wire, in 5x5 and 6x6 centimetre apertures, 150 centimetres high in 20 metre rolls. PVC coated chain link fence is offered in 2.2 and 2.5 millimetre wire with a green coated surface. Where only a boundary line is required, those products remain the more economical answer; where screening is required, the grass-strip build is the reason to pay more.

Wind, snow and service life: where grass fence systems are tested

A closed surface is a surface wind cannot pass through. Plain mesh lets wind flow between the wires; a grass-strip build behaves like a sail. That is not a defect, it is a design input: on exposed ground the post spacing tightens, the posts get longer and the embedment goes deeper.

Snow behaves similarly. It collects along the lower part of a closed fence and loads the bottom edge as it settles. Leaving a few centimetres of clearance between the bottom edge and the ground reduces that load and keeps vegetation from binding to the fabric.

Service life is governed by sunlight and by the carrier. Strips fade gradually, but what ends the life of the assembly is corrosion of the carrier; that is why the carrier is specified before the strips. Maintenance is minimal: rinse once a year, retighten loosened ties, and keep the base clear of growth.

Panel carrier or roll carrier

The choice is usually driven by the site rather than the budget. A panel carrier gives a rigid, uniform face, wants a straight line and installs in fixed increments; it suits residences, compounds and corporate premises. A roll carrier adapts far better to sloping and irregular ground and covers long boundaries quickly.

Appearance divides the two as well. Panel-carried assemblies read as ordered and corporate, which is why most decorative specifications end up on that side. Roll carriers give a more natural boundary and are entirely adequate for farmland, orchards and hobby plots. Where the decision is genuinely open, the rule is simple: straight and visible frontage takes panels, long and uneven boundary takes rolls.

Gates and corners deserve separate attention, because failures rarely start along the straight runs. The carrier has to terminate at every opening, and corner posts take load from two directions at once. Using a longer post and bracing the corner at those points prevents most of the sagging that shows up a few seasons later.

A quotation is accurate first time when six figures are available: total perimeter length, selected height, number and width of gates, whether the ground slopes, whether the base is soil or concrete, and the delivery destination with the incoterm you work to. Without those, any number is an estimate; with them, the bill of materials and the total are firm.

Post count depends on the carrier: with rigid panels the spacing equals the panel width, while with roll carriers the spacing is tightened on exposed or windy ground.
Should I use a grass strip build or plain wire mesh, how do I decide between them?
It depends on what the boundary has to achieve. If marking the line is enough, plain mesh is more economical and takes less wind load because air passes through it. If the view has to be blocked, a grass strip build is required because it forms a closed surface. That closed surface also acts like a sail, so on exposed sites the posts are set closer together and embedded deeper.
We are on an exposed windy site, will a closed fence cause problems there?
It can, but this is a design matter rather than a product fault. A closed surface transfers wind load into the posts, so spacing is tightened, longer posts are selected and embedment depth is increased. Snow behaves similarly by collecting along the lower section, which is why a few centimetres of ground clearance under the bottom edge is worth keeping.
