What Is the NATO Type Post For?

The angled concrete post, widely known as the NATO type, bends outward from the protected area at its top. Barbed or razor wire is run along this bend; anyone attempting to climb from outside meets that overhang. No such top barrier can be built on a straight post, which makes its security level markedly lower.

The 240 cm angled post is used where access control matters: construction sites, warehouses, substations, water tanks, fuel stations and industrial facilities. Wire mesh or panel fencing fills the lower section, with three or four rows of barbed wire along the top bend.

Barbed Wire Layout

Three or four rows of barbed wire are normally run along the angled top; keeping 12-15 cm between rows makes passing through effectively impossible. Where higher security is required, concertina razor wire can be fitted along the same bend instead.

Each row must be tensioned separately; tensioning them all at once causes the wires to ride over one another and leave gaps.

Installation Notes

The most important point with angled posts is consistency of direction: every post must lean the same way, outward from the protected area. Posts set in mixed directions both spoil the appearance and defeat the security purpose. Foundation depth is the same as the straight post, 50-60 cm; but because of the wire load at the top, struts at corner posts matter even more.
